The Minutemen : Double Nickles on the Dime

Genre: Punk

Dates: 1984

Three self-described "corndogs" from San Pedro, California "purged all their rock" (in bassist Mike Watt's words) and metamorphosed into the most original American punk rock band of the early 1980s. In fact, on first hearing, one will be hard-pressed to call it punk: D. Boon's guitar is Jerry Garcia hopped up on two pots of coffee, and Watt and drummer George Hurley would give any avant-jazz rhythm section a serious scare. Their songs seldom reached the two-minute mark and often didn't surpass a minute (this 43-song release—not a greatest hits set!—fits on a single CD); however, they're packed with unpretentious, angry, and stunned political observations of the first half of the Reagan presidency. Inspiring…but in danger of disappearing into the dustbin of history for those who weren't there. And for budding young musicians who are strapped for cash, bear in mind their motto, powerfully reinforced on this, their best-ever record: "We Jam Econo."
