All of this great Alabama band's studio records are good—most are great—but this one captures them in the element that defined them, and ultimately killed them. Far from being a dumb redneck, lead singer and songwriter Ronnie Van Zant knew that actually trying to live one's life came with risks, and never shied away from 'em; in fact, it is hard to imagine a more fearless songwriter and performer in American music. Also, he was not allergic to critiquing his own choices. Any doubter should listen through the hard-assed, triple-guitar-driven music (in the '70s, topped only—and only occasionally—by Led Zep and Neil Young's Crazy Horse band) for lyrics like "Two feets they come a creepin'/Like a black cat do/And two bodies are lyin' naked/Creeper think he got nothin' to lose/So he creeps into this house, yeah/And unlocks the door/And while a man reaching for his trousers/Shoots him full of .38 holes/It's a saturday night special/Got a barrel that's blue and cold/Ain't no good for nothin'/But put a man six feet in a hole!" A redneck? Singing a gun-control song? And running from a fight (see "Gimme Three Steps")? The truth, my friends, requires intense concentration. Highly recommended to fans of the Drive-By Truckers.
