Loretta Lynn : Country Music Hall of Fame Series

Genre: Country

Dates: 1961-1976

Straight out of Kentucky mining territory, a mother several times over before she was out of her teens, and more steadfast in standing by her man than Tammy Wynette, she beat rock and rollers to a homespun feminism by a over a half-decade (if you count Lesley Gore's "You Don't Own Me"). Her tough singing and writing—and cutting humor—amounted to a gauntlet thrown down against the male chauvinism and self-pity that defined country music (and still does). If you don't believe me, check this out and listen to "The Pill," which suffered censorship at the time.
