Lighnin' Hopkins

Lightnin' Hopkins : Blues Kingpins

Genre: Blues

Dates: 1946 - ???

Sam “Lightnin’” Hopkins, along with John Lee Hooker, to whose fans he is unequivocally recommended, was one of the most idiosyncratic of all bluesmen, ignoring standard bar structures, picking melodies and riffs out of the blues’ own version of outer space, and grabbing you by the throat whether playing acoustic or electric—providing you paid him cash in front. This is a neat and surprising survey of what he could do; if you dig it, look for Rhino Records’ two-disc box, which will take you the rest of the way.
