Leadbelly: Take This Hammer - The Complete RCA Victor Recordings

Genre: Blues

Dates: 1930's-1940's

Murderer, songster, bluesman, 12-string guitarslinger, political symbol—Huddie Ledbetter wore many hats, and, unfortunately, no collection exists that satisfactorily represents them all. This one, however, comes close. It is special for his pairing with the fabulous Golden Gate Jubilee Gospel Quartet on a passel of old slave songs that they brilliantly resuscitate. Plus, the versions of his classic "Midnight Special" and "Rock Island Line" are his best on record, and "Good Morning Blues" and "Red Cross Store" are among his deepest blues.
