John Lee Hooker: The Very Best of John Lee Hooker

Genre: Blues

Dates:1940's - 1990's

As one can tell from the near-50-year range of this collection, The Hook was an eternal presence on the American music scene after World War II, stomping out his endless boogie and snapping the strings on his eccentric, venomous guitar on more than an album a year during that period. Equally comfortable and effective whether alone or backed by a full band (both modes are represented on this collection), his sound was an influence on artists ranging from the Animals to Van Morrison to ZZ Top to Beck, and, though he seemed to live forever, it's hard to believe he's actually gone.
