Janis Joplin : Greatest Hits

Genre: Rock

Dates: 1967-1970

The Counterculture Queen was often tabbed “hysterical” and “screeching,” but—especially on this too-short collection—she had an underrated mastery of dynamics and variety of moods that would have evolved even more fascinatingly had she lived beyond 30, as surviving hippie-soul sisters like Maria Muldaur have proven. Another testament to her ability to make direct contact with listeners’ innards (as opposed to causing them to cover their ears) is that she remains popular with a younger generation of listeners some of whom do not know who the Rolling Stones are. And what an interpreter! Name someone today who can match her ability to take over someone else’s song and make it her own, permanently.
