Caution: if you are feeling effervescent, ebullient, light on your feet, bubbly—stay the heck away from the record! Lyricist and singer Ian Curtis still reigns supreme as the King of Eloquent Despair, and his band, which after his demise would morph into New Order, the greatest postpunk dance band of the '80s, created evocatively gloomy setting tailor-made for his dark vision. Like Kurt Cobain, who was a fan, Curtis never "sold out"; the man hanged himself, for Chrissakes! Sad, sad, sad—millions of disillusioned fans left holding the bag. Serves 'em right for idolatry, right? At any rate, as a person who is up most of the time and who does not/cannot/will not truck with mopery, I find their sound and vision addictive, and absolutely no threat to my health. It helps to concentrate on the rhythms and the writing. Haunting line: "Heart and soul/One will burn."
