Lots of white boys wanted to be Ray Charles, and who could blame them? Cocker is the only one (save Stevie Winwood, briefly, on "Gimme Some Lovin'" and “I’m a Man,” with the Spencer Davis Group) who succeeded, mainly by putting his vocal cords and body through hell, surrounding himself with musical sharpies (Chris Stainton, Leon Russell, Jimmy Page), and not only picking covers with imagination (Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Lloyd Price, the Lovin' Spoonful, the Beatles on this album alone), but also putting a unique spin on each of them. Regarding the latter skill, he was indubitably the greatest interpretative rock and roll singer of the 1960s, Janis Joplin included. John Belushi and Cocker’s own boozing may have turned him into a joke, but, kids, this is anything but.
