The San Francisco Sound, on the verge of world conquest. Both Grace Slick and Marty Balin sang like the Sirens—with a hypnotic, oddly terrifying, otherwordly intensity—and the band was tough and elastic enough to stretch with them. Like the Doors (see above), they would degenerate into awesome silliness, but this catches them at their peak.
