Harry Nilsson: Personal Best |
Genre: Pop |
Dates: 1960s-1970s |
The umpteenth “Fifth Beatle” is the only one to really redefine himself as a unique artist. Even if you don’t know Harry, you know Harry: “Everybody’s Talkin’” (“’bout me/I don’t hear a word they’re sayin’…”), (“I can’t liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiive/If livin’ is) “Without You,” “One” (“is the loneliest number that/You’ll ever do…”), (“Put de lime in de”) “Coconut” (“and call me in the morning”)—all included on this collection—are part of the common American pop vocabulary. But you’ll be knocked out by some of the wilder and weirder experiments here, and by the artiste’s phenomenal vocal range, which unlike most great technical singers’ includes the ability to cut. And you’ll wonder, “How come I’ve never heard of this guy before?”
