This 11-fingered guitarist's tombstone reads: "He couldn't play #@!*, but he sure made it sound good!" The only blues records as raw and gloriously gutbucket as this are the other two Taylor cut during his lifetime, and all three showcase a three-piece band that took its inheritance from slide guitar great Elmore James (who took his from Robert Johnson, see above), boiled it down to its irreducible elements, and brought it to life on the cheapest equipment money could steal. Hound Dog himself played a Japanese guitar he bought for $50! One of the most compelling arguments against musical technomania ever made.
