Gram Parsons : GP/Grievous Angel

Genre: Country Rock

Dates: 1973-1974

On the International Submarine Band’s Safe at Home, The ByrdsSweetheart of the Rodeo, and The Flying Burrito BrothersThe Gilded Palace of Sin, Parsons invented country-rock, a genre that, unfortunately, has never been better than at its birth (fans of The Eagles, Uncle Tupelo, and Wilco might disagree). On his two solo albums, both included on this release, Parsons cooled his heels a bit (at least as far as the power and precision of his writing was concerned) and enjoyed his creation. With a barely-known Emmylou Harris chiming in in harmony—these are almost duet recordings—he sang, as always, about the wages of sin, about the collision of the city and country, about the deepest personal tragedies (I am not sure a more tragic American song’s been written than “$1000 Wedding”), and, in a few months, he’d be dead of pills and booze at 27. Don’t play this CD if you just had your heart broken—I am warning you seriously.
