Among hard rock singers, only Robert Plant (see Led Zeppelin, below) can match Axl Rose's ability to both rock your ass and touch your heart. And I'm not sure Plant's ever done both at the same time, as Axl does here on "My Michelle" and "Sweet Child of Mine." Neither he nor the band quite lived up to the promise this record made—to deliver all the bad boy and girls in their audience to hair metal heaven—but that doesn't diminish its incredible playability and consistency. Tip from a music archaeologist: if you haven't heard their cover album The Spaghetti Incident, do so—a great look at their roots.
