George Jones: The Best of George Jones |
Genre: Country |
Dates: 1955-1967 |
"The Possum" may well be the greatest singer country music has ever produced; no less than Frank Sinatra has called him "the second greatest American singer ever." Though this compilation is a tease—it'd have to be expanded by at least a couple of discs and three decades to do George justice—it's still not a bad introduction. Jones' flexible tenor and unerring phrasing can turn a piece of dreck into a tragedy of near-Shakespearean proportions; when he wrenches out a syllable from between clenched teeth, or glides from deep baritone to a high tenor whisper, you will know the sound of heartbreak. Waylon Jennings: "If we could all sound like we wanted to, we'd sound like George Jones."
