Genre: Pop Rock |
Dates: 1980's |
They started out as West Coast punkers—lead singer Belinda Carlisle was a member of the Germs, for Chrissakes—and ended up the best thing that had happened to pop radio in years. As neat as their songs are (and I do mean are—these hits have retained their freshness over the near-quarter century since their emergence), the band's mere existence was liberating. Though they were not the first self-contained all-woman pop band (a few had beat them to that landmark) none were as commercially and critically successful, and none were as fully behind the wheel of their own vehicle. And don't be fooled by the brightness and bounce of "We Got the Beat," "Our Lips Our Sealed," and "Vacation." They conceal the attitude of…punks.
