Front man, self-sufficiency expert, label owner, and straight-edge pioneer Ian MacKaye made his reputation with the hardcore New Puritanism of Minor Threat. Inspired by the Minutemen, Gang of Four, and the desire to escape imitative taint as much as possible, his new band's music paved the way for the first—and most durable—wave of emo. Sixteen years down the road, their concert tickets are still $5, their shows are always all-ages, their records are still cheap, they control all aspects of their art and commerce, and their music is still challenging (try 2001's Argument).
