Elliott Smith’s struggles were caused by his own addictions, which reduce the amount of sympathy one can feel about his premature demise.  Musically, though, Smith offers little exclusiveness, but the chords are simple enough to compliment his fragile delivery and philosophical limbo.  This marks the last time he put complete emphasis on vocals and lyrics, with X/O and later recordings featuring more instruments and “fuller” arrangements, subduing his best attribute: the feelings.
