Elton John : Greatest Hits |
Genre: British Pop |
Dates: 1971-1975 |
Though his artistic reputation has suffered serious deterioration over the last quarter century (compare the added-on double-hanky "Candle in the Wind" to the two songs which precede it), Elton's singles did more to keep the spirit of rock and roll radio alive than anyone's during the mid-'70s malaise. I know; I was there. Cheerfully ripping off Jerry Lee Lewis here, the Rolling Stones there, the Beatles everywhere, singing lyrics like "Hey kids/Shake it loose together/The spotlight's hittin' somethin' that's been known to change the weather" as if they held the key to the universe, he was…cool. The only problem with this collection—for shame, because there's plenty of room—is that it's missing another two years' worth of great hit songs.
