Rakim brought the vocal sneer (now an essential quality for anyone who wants cred; Nas, to name one current star among many, would be nowhere without the man) to rap MC style, and a knack for meta-meta-metaphors. The knock on this team was that Eric B didn't provide fresh enough beats, but, in retrospect, they sound pretty good to me, especially on the mind-bogglingly inventive "Follow the Leader" and "Let the Rhythm Hit 'Em'. Ahead of its time: the exotic Middle Eastern flavor of the "Paid in Full" remix.
