Dwight Yoakam: Just Lookin' for a Hit

Genre: Country

Dates: 1980's

Yoakam not only brought a purity of style back to country music with his Kentucky twang, but gave it a shot of hard rock and roll rhythm. Over the last 25 years, few country singers have matched the consistency of his singing, writing, and band (fired on these cuts by ace guitarist-producer Pete Anderson). This collection, which covers the first decade of his career, is a little skimpy, but neatly displays his exceptional range: the neo-rockabilly of "Long White Cadillac" (written by Blaster Dave Alvin, it's the story—in poetry—of Hank Williams, Sr.), the deep heartache of "Little Ways," the defiance of "Honky Tonk Man," and the headlong determination of "Guitars, Cadillacs (and Hillbilly Music)."
