Deeee-troit’s Mick Collins is a rarity: a black garage-rocker. After years of raw skronking (legend has it Collins has never learned a traditional guitar chord) in cult-exalted bands like The Gories, The Screws, The King Sound Quartet, and Blacktop—keeping the “black rock” that none other than Chuck Berry invented alive—he led his current unit into the soul music territory staked out and abandoned by Sly and the Family Stone on this record. In true garage rock fashion, the set list is almost all covers, but nothing you’ve heard in years, and Collins’ shouting vocals and razor-sharp guitar put them over as if they were all #1 hits. Result: the best rock and roll party album of the 21st century. Never heard of ‘em? Better change that, kids.
