Del McCoury : A Deeper Shade of Blue

Genre: Bluegrass

Dates: 1993

Folks who thought the O Brother Where Art Thou? soundtrack was the unvarnished bluegrass truth need to check themselves, and check this out. Del, on laser-tenor vocals and rhythm guitar, sang lead for King Bill Monroe in the '60s, and at times seems to channel the old master. His boys (especially Ronnie, on blistering, inventive mandolin) play with an intensity that shows up better-known players as the somewhat bloodless purists they are. And they bedeck their own tunes with 'grassed-up covers of Jerry Lee Lewis, Willie Nelson, and Lefty Frizzell. Keep your Internet eye open for the July/August Steelville, Missouri, Bluegrass Festival, where they frequently knock out audiences.
