They would later enrage (half) the country with such radical moves as exercising their right to freedom of speech, but before the turn of the century, they were proving that a hit country album could still sound very country (hints of bluegrass, Natalie Maines’ proudly and authentically Texas twang), have teeth (“Goodbye Earl”), and knock the top off of the charts. See also the very enlightening DVD detailing their post-free speech struggles, Shut Up and Sing!, also available in the collection. I await their greatest hits collection, which will be one for the ages.
