They played unplugged in Hickman's Little Theatre on March 31,
2005—for free. This is perhaps their most consistent album, mainly
because guitarists Patterson Hood, Mike Cooley, and Jason Isbell hit writing
peaks at the same time. Besides giving the listener personal insights into life
in the South (particularly their home state Alabama), they tell stories of fascinating
detail, realism, and depth about Americans struggling to survive a cultural
scrum between the past, present, and future. Said Americans range from icons
like John Henry, John Wayne, Sheriff Buford Pusser, and Sam
Phillips to determined, complicated poor folks trying to keep themselves
and their families from going over the edge. A rich—and seriously
rockin'—listen.
