Pity this couldn't be compressed to a perfect single disc (all the second disc really achieves is showing how vainly he's striven to match his '70s heights), but of the many Bowie comps, including the box, this is the one that doesn't miss a masterpiece. Looking back over the tracks, hearing them in my mind's ear, and running a slide show in my memory of his metamorphoses, I annoint him the punk Elton John: phony as all get out, bland in his dotage, but, for a time, very rockin' and very fun.
