Derek and the Dominoes

Derek and the Dominoes : Layla

Genre: Blues

Dates: 1970

Besides being a tour de force of blues styles, besides being—let’s be honest—the last time God (aka Eric Clapton) asserted his mind-boggling chops, solid songwriting skills, and warm, humble singing in such a consistent, focused manner, Layla is the ultimate “pain of love” album. Thus I both recommend it to the lovelorn and warn them off it. The band’s stellar—if you like it as much as I do, seek out the albums of Delaney and Bonnie, where they (and, often, Clapton) are just as stellar, playing blues and soul with rare humility and nuance—but the secret weapon walked in the studio, put on a set of headphones, and overdubbed scorching, moving slide guitar support. Remember the name: Duane Allman. Especially highly recommended to listeners who think they hate Eric Clapton and white blues in general.
