Dion and the Belmonts: Dion Hits

Genre: Pop/Doo Wop

Dates: 1950s - 1960's

It may be hard to believe from our vantage point, but, at the advent of rock and roll, this was the soundtrack of teenage gang exploits. Dion DiMucci, a gang refugee himself, and his backup buddies grew up singing on Bronx street corners, and continually assaulted the pop charts with their intriguing rough and sweet harmonies in the late '50s and early '60s. DiMucci transcended teen idol pap (much as Justin Timberlake can do at his best) with pure speed ("I Wonder Why") and a touch of danger ("Born to Cry," "Lovers Who Wander"), but the highlights here are rock's great Top 40 double-standard duo, "Runaround Sue" and "The Wanderer." While you may find it egregious that Dion condemns the liberated chick in the former and boasts about his own liberation in the latter, the edge and exuberance of his vocals will likely force your fingertip to the "Repeat" button.
