Simply by supplying the rhythm track for the first big rap hit, “Rapper’s Delight,” with their classic “Good Times,” and by helping to kick off (“Dance, Dance, Dance”) and define (“Le Freak”) disco, NYC’s finest rhythm section earns a huge place in music history. But listen to the lyrics while you’re dancing, and you’ll hear an interesting analysis of late ‘70s hedonism (that’s living for pleasure, kids); “Rebels Are We” and “Real People” just might become personal anthems for you, like they have for me. And if you need more than those reasons to convince you to check out a ‘70s dance music that supposedly “sucked,” Nile Rodgers (guitar), Tony Thompson (drums), and—especially—Bernard Edwards (bass) are the Rolling Stones of disco. I kid you not. That’s why the bulk of this compilation still sounds fresh.
