Along with Alvin Youngblood Hart, Harris has been the most successful of the current wave of younger blues artists in attempting to infuse the now century-old music with new energy, enthusiasm, and ideas. He's equally comfortable with modernizations ("Basehead"), gospel ("Just a Closer Walk with Thee"), shots from the canon ("Sweet Black Angel," "Diddy Wah Diddy"), outside influences ("Eh La Bas," "Pas Parlez"), and whimsy ("In the Kitchen with Mama"). Some may find this stew's ingredients either too overpowering or incongruous, but the chef's will and joy in experimentation are worth tasting.
