Bruce Springsteen : Born to Run

Genre: Rock and Roll

Dates: 1975

Before politics, before megastardom, before weightlifting, headbands, and bad dancing with Courtney Cox in corny videos, and before fatal self-seriousness…Springsteen was the poet of the beautiful loser. This is truly one of the great concept albums in rock and roll history, and it starts with a gearhead desperado offering his paramour a ride in his hotrod, a ride to deliverance from this prison we tend to call LIFE. As utopian in its own way as the Beach Boys (see above), and even more of a dangerous illusion, still, it's what working class rock and roll is all about: transcendence of the grinding ordinariness of the 9-to-5 set. The man can tell stories, and these will keep you planted.
