Silent Alarm

Bloc Party : Silent Alarm

Genre: Alternative Rock

Dates: 2005

Bloc Party’s Silent Alarm has helped shape the stereotype of coffee-shop dwelling college students who sport MacBooks and feel no guilt for illegally downloading music: at this writing, three years after its release, this album is the apparent legacy.  Poppish yet abrasive, Silent Alarm’s guitar licks and power-chords weren’t exclusively considered “indie rock” back in ’05, but a Franz Ferdinand or Arctic Monkeys album later, and they’re already a tired approach.  For those dabbling a bit past the mainstream, Bloc Party could intrigue...that is all. (Editor’s note: guitars are never tired—and never will be—when applied correctly.) (Review by Jon Hadusek)
