Beck : Mutations |
Genre: Alternative Rock |
Dates: 1998 |
After reaching star status with Odelay’s sample-heavy party music, Beck hit the studio for the first time with what has now become his partner-producer Nigel Godrich. Based on Godrich’s previous ventures with Radiohead, one might predict a much more mature, industrial sound from the “rock” side of Beck’s arsenal; however, only the former would come to be. Before Mellow Gold, Beck’s sound was a strange amalgam of surrealism and scattered folk; Mutations sounds like an adult looking back at his former self, realizing his mistakes and correcting them. Aside from “Tropicalia,” the album’s highlight median, Beck returns to his roots, with some of Godrich’s atmospheric electronic dust sprinkled on top. (Review by Jon Hadusek)
