Various Artists : Beautiful Dreamer - The Songs of Stephen Foster |
Genre: |
Dates: 2004 |
Stephen Foster was the first star songwriter in American history, a statement borne out by the fact that even you kiddos could ID about half of these songs! He loved pretty much every songform available to him during his lifetime (basically, the mid-1800s), particularly "coon songs," that age's perjorative term for the music of black folks. The neat thing about this collection is that his "greatest hits" (he died broke) are interpreted for the most part by the cream of American traditional country singers, with Alvin Youngblood Hart and Mavis Staples providing an African-American perspective. History teachers: this is a must for your Civil War/Reconstruction unit!
