Bo Diddley : His Best

Genre: Rock and Roll

Dates: 1955-1966

Like his then-labelmate Chuck Berry, Bo’s music defied category and forged its own: rock and roll. Also like Berry, his guitar style—the shave-and-a-haircut/two-bits rhythm, adapted from Latin and African influences—has permutated endlessly in the hands of a legion of acolytes. Most resounding, however, was his outrageous sense of humor, which leaped ahead to the world of hip-hop; in fact, "Say Man" might be called the first rap record.
