One might complain about the haphazard organization of this collection, but it communicates an important fact about the most important American songwriter of the last half of the 20th century: the versatility and unpredictability of his genius was—and is, as 2001's Love and Theft, proved—jaw-dropping. Social protest, surrealist songpoems, ditties, love paeans, novelties, gospel, country and western laments, mysterious anomalies—no pitch exists that the man can't hammer out of the park. Even more intriguing is that, after nearly a half-century of torrential artistic expression, an enigma is what Dylan remains.
