A utopian vision of sun, surf, cars, and girls—who could resist, and who would want to? Never mind that the architect couldn't surf, was crippled by social insecurities, and loved holing up in his room. Of such strange contradictions are great pop made, and with a few exceptions the Beach Boys' greatest pop is here. The contradictions are laid bare, though, in the elliptically anti-utopian "In My Room."
