Straight out of Festus, Missouri, the Bottlerockets are clearly the
hardest-rocking band in state history, akin to a Midwestern Crazy
Horse, Lynyrd Skynyrd, or Drive-By Truckers. While this is not their best
record (look for The Brooklyn Side),
it's still pretty great. Brian Henneman writes solid songs—not as
specifically as he used to, though—and plays mean guitar, but one of the
highlights of this record is producer Warren Haynes' six-string support. If
you've heard of Derek and the Dominoes' Layla,
this is a humble American version (and that's interesting, since Haynes chases
Duane Allman's ghost nightly as the Allman Brothers'
lead guitarist).
