Arlo Guthrie : The Best of Arlo Guthrie

Genre: Folk Rock

Dates: 1967-1977

Being the son of America’s greatest folk music master had to be a heavy load to carry, especially since he’d died before the kid started his career, but, on these tunes, Arlo Guthrie demonstrated he was a distinctly different talent who, if not as definitive an artist, was worthy of close listening. This CD is worth checking out if only for “Alice’s Restaurant,” which, if you’ve never heard it, is one of the biggest shaggy dog stories in American musical history, complete with a twist ending, and “City of New Orleans” (written by unsung tunesmith Steve Goodman) even hit the Top 40, something Papa Woody never did (even if he wouldn’t have wanted to).
