Al Green : Greatest Hits

Genre: Soul

Dates: 1970-1975

Soul music, refined to the highest degree, straight from Memphis, Tennessee, the city that's the fountainhead of American music if any could really make the claim. Green was the most complete of soul men: he could rock ("Love and Happiness," "I Can't Get Next to You"), seduce ("Tired of Being Alone," "Call Me," "You Ought to Be With Me," "Let's Get Married"), plead ("Let's Stay Together," "Livin' for You"), even make his case to the Lord in the face of physical weakness (the supernal, eternal "Belle"). After a romantic disaster that cost a woman her life and permanently scarred Green himself, he turned the Lord for good, but, on this collection, the listener will be tempted to wonder if he didn't thing romantic love and God were one and the same. As divine as Green's vocals are, don't forget to concentrate on the music, anchored by the three Hodges brothers, and a drummer named Al Jackson, who made his bones with Booker T and the MGs and Otis Redding.
