Allman Brothers Band : Martin Scorsese presents...

Genre: Southern Rock

Dates: 1969-1979

They basically invented the genre, though one might argue Lynyrd Skynyrd perfected it, and where would so many groups on the jam band circuit be without them? Amazingly, they still kick considerable butt live and have nurtured a substantial career despite having lost two major players—slide guitar genius Duane Allman (for whom Skynyrd’s “Free Bird” was written) and original bassist Berry Oakley—to tragic vehicular accidents, and others two various and sundry other forces. Many compilations are out there to choose from; this one gives you the best tour of what they were capable of, and necessarily keeps the 20-minute-plus jams to a minimum. Duane...R.I.P.
