Mission Statement

The Hickman Review has two goals: to produce a literary and arts magazine of the highest possible quality and to give voice to Hickman students. We select high quality manuscript and art submissions from a variety of artists and combine them into an intriguing and unified design. During the selection process, we maintain anonymity of authors and artists to help us focus only on the merit of each submission. To ensure that the magazine contains art and writing of the highest caliber, we emphasize quality over quantity. Each piece in The Hickman Review should demonstrate creativity through an original idea or a fresh take on a familiar idea. We also focus on the power of the submission, which should provoke thought and emotion. A high quality submission should also demonstrate good craftsmanship and professionalism. Because pieces may lack this polish, we revise some of the submissions. In our search for quality and diversity we do not focus on the political correctness of a piece. Instead, we consider the content of submissions artistically and not on the appeal, or lack thereof, it may have to the majority of the public. Finally, we must also consider, although it does not reflect the value of a piece, how art will reproduce in the magazine. We look for an assortment of art and manuscript submissions that demonstrate a fresh taste, good idea and talented execution.
