Advantages

"Advisory" We believe students benefit from close relationships with adults and peers in a safe environment. By meeting daily in this type of environment, students express interests, goals, and needs that can be addressed through structured activities during advisory time. School bulletin announcements and relevant student information is discussed at this time.

"Attendance Award" Each quarter students with no absences and no more than two tardies will receive an attendance award from Schnucks.

"Attendance Trip" On the last day of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd quarters, a field trip will be planned for students having good attendance. Students that have missed no more than 3 days (excused or unexcused) will be eligible to sign up for the trip. Students that attend the trip will not be required to take the exams, but will receive a score of 100% on the exams.

"Auction" During the year students may accumulate points earned from receiving A's or B's for quarter grades and receiving Attendance Awards and/or Top Dog Awards. These points are used as "dollars" at an auction held during 4th quarter. Local businesses and friends of Douglass donate items such as pizza certificates, movie passes, TV's, bicycles, DVD's, jewelry, clothing, and more.

"Senior Career Portfolio" All Douglass students will complete a Career Portfolio to take with them upon graduation. The Portfolio includes completion of a self-assessment, investigation of career paths and work habits, visitations to post-secondary institutions, completion of a resume and other employment documents, completion of a volunteer experience, and written summation of these experiences.

"Top Dog Award" An award is presented every quarter by each teacher to one outstanding student. This award is based upon promptness, being prepared, being positive, alert, and eager to learn, being courteous, working cooperatively with others, following directions, accepting responsibility for behavior, materials, and learning, respecting the rights and property of others, and striving to show academic achievement. Students are recognized by the Columbia Daily Tribune with a certificate as well as a keepsake at the Top Dog Ceremony attended by family and friends of each recipient.
