Social Studies

The Columbia Public Schools Social Studies Department prepares each student to be a responsible citizen in his or her community, nation, and world. The curriculum promotes critical thinking, problem solving, and literacy skills that are essential to living in an increasingly diverse and interdependent world. By graduation, the goals for all students are to be able to analyze the past, draw analogies to the present, and speculation about the future; appreciate the United States' democratic heritage, laws, institutions, and processes; communicate effectively, orally and in writing; respect the individual differences, contributions, and ideals of all people; explore careers that have foundations in the social studies; utilize decision-making and problem-solving strategies in a democratic setting; appreciate the similarities and diversities of world cultures; and understand the fundamentals of economic and political systems.
