From 1999 to 2004, several Columbia School District elementary
schools participated in a collaborative research project with Dr. Tim
Lewis to implement Positive Behavior Support (PBS). Dr. Lewis is the
chair of the
Special Education
Department, from the
University of Missouri-Columbia, and
is a research partner in the PBS National Center. As word of PBS spread, other schools expressed interest and began
the process of implementing school-wide PBS. Columbia Public Schools
went district-wide with PBS during the 2004-05 academic year with
one half-time district-wide PBS coordinator, who continued the
collaboration with Dr Lewis. During the 2005-06 academic year, the
district implemented PBS across 18 elementary schools and several
secondary schools, and several more are in various stages of
preparation for implementation. The PBS coordinator has been joined
by two full-time PBS facilitators to continue to provide technical
assistance and professional development across the district. The
collaboration with Dr. Lewis continues.
