2012 Bond Issue and Tax Levy Proposal

Thank you, Columbia voters!

April 3 Special Election

The Columbia Board of Education has called a special election on Tuesday, April 3, to submit a bond issue proposal and a tax levy proposal to Columbia voters. The bond proposal would require a four-sevenths, or 57 percent, majority approval; the tax levy proposal would require a simple majority.

Facts About Columbia Public Schools

Did you know . . .

  • Student enrollment has increased by more than 1,200 students in the last ten years; another 1,200 students are projected over the next five years
  • 17,709 students are enrolled
  • 153 trailers are in use, housing 23 percent of all students
  • There are 34 school buildings and 5 support facilities
  • There are 2.9 million square feet of building space to maintain
  • There are 1.8 million square feet of roof space to maintain
  • More than half the buildings are 40 years old or older
  • Only one of our schools is 10 years old or newer (Alpha Hart Lewis Elementary)

In order to maintain and continue to improve our schools, Columbia Public Schools has developed a ten-year strategic plan to address growth. CPS plans to submit bond issue proposals and tax levy increases for public approval every two years in accordance with the following plan.
