2014 Bond Issue and Tax Levy Proposal

Thank you, Columbia voters!

April 8 Special Election

The Columbia Board of Education has called a special election on Tuesday, April 8, to submit a bond issue proposal to Columbia voters. The bond proposal would require a four-sevenths, or 57 percent, majority approval.

Facts About Columbia Public Schools

Did you know . . .

  • Student enrollment has increased by 1,700 students since the year 2000; another 1,200 students are projected over the next five years
  • 17,905 students are enrolled
  • 123 trailers are in use, housing 18 percent of all students
  • There are 34 school buildings and 3 support facilities
  • There are 3 million square feet of building space to maintain
  • There are 1.9 million square feet of roof space to maintain
  • More than half the buildings are 40 years old or older
  • Only two of our schools are 10 years old or newer (Alpha Hart Lewis Elementary School and Battle High School)

In order to maintain and continue to improve our schools, Columbia Public Schools has developed a strategic plan to address growth. CPS plans to submit bond issue proposals and tax levy increases for public approval every two years in accordance with the following plan.
