Prescription Drug Program

The Columbia Public School District has contracted with MedTrak Services to manage the pharmacy portion of the medical plan.  Members enrolled in the District's medical plan can utilize the pharmacy program with the medical plan insurance I.D. card.

This program covers prescriptions filled at participating retail pharmacies. A list of participating retail pharmacies is available through the link below. The pharmacy program also covers prescriptions filled at the Mail Order Pharmacy. Effective January 1, 2003, the new mail order pharmacy is Walgreens Healthcare Plus located in Phoenix, Arizona.

Basic Plan 2013:

Drugs that are covered under the prescription benefit program are listed on a "Formulary" and fall under three classifications: (see the Summary Plan Description for full description of the prescription drug benefit.)

Local Pharmacy - Employees can have prescriptions filled at local participating pharmacies as follows.

  • Tier 1 - Generic Drugs - $15 co-pay for a 30-day supply. Drugs that are chemically and therapeutically equivalent to brand name drugs, but are not protected by a patent.
  • Tier 2 - Preferred Drugs - $30 co-pay for a 30-day supply. Drugs designated by the Plan as superior or equal to other brand name drugs, but are more cost-effective.
  • Tier 3 - Non-Preferred Drugs - $45 co-pay for a 30-day supply. Drugs that the Plan has determined are not usually clinically necessary and that have more cost-effective therapeutic alternatives.

Plus Plan:

  • Under the Plus Plan, your prescription costs apply to the deductible.  You pay 100% of prescription costs until your deductible is met.  Once the deductible has been met, covered prescriptions, like other qualified medical expenses are reimbursed at 100% (subject to applicable plan limitations).  There are no prescription copays under the Plus Plan.

  • When you use your medical ID card and get your prescription filled, the cost information is submitted to the medical plan, and the amounts are applied to your deductible.

MAIL ORDER - For maintenance drugs, an employee can save money by ordering a 90-day supply via mail order to MedTrak Services. For maintenance type prescriptions, we suggest employees use the mail order option. Not only does the employee save money, but mail order use offers larger discounts to the District, enabling the District to maintain current benefits and rates.

Basic Plan:

Tier 1 - Generic Drug:

$25 co-pay for a 90-day supply

Tier 2 - Preferred Drug:

$55 co-pay for a 90-day supply

Tier 3 - Non-Preferred Drug:

$90 co-pay for a 90-day supply

For mail order forms, contact your building's main office or the Employee Benefit's Office.

* Keep Copays Low - Use Mail Order! *

Mail order is easy to use:

  • Ask your doctor to write your prescription for a 90-day supply, plus refills for up to one year, if appropriate.
  • Then mail your prescription with your copayment in the preaddressed mail order envelope.
  • Your prescription will be shipped to you at your home or office within two weeks.
  • To reorder, simply call the toll-free refill number.

Plus Plan:

You can use the mail order option to purchase three months of prescriptions, but you will be charged for the three month cost of the prescriptions.  Mail order does provide additional discounts on prescription drugs you purchase.

Additional Mail Order Tips:

  • Many employees use the mail order option to receive the discounted cost of the prescription drugs, and to avoid the time spent picking up prescriptions at local pharmacies.

  • Generally speaking, generic prescription drugs are cheaper at the local pharmacies, and brand name drugs are less costly through mail order.  Prescription costs can vary at the various retail pharmacies.

  • For prescription drug information, go to www.medtrakservices.com and click on the members tab at the top, then click on "Need to Register".  For the cardholder ID entry, enter the number from the front of your medical ID card.  Next, long in by creating a user ID and password.  You will have access to a history of your prescription drug purchases, your costs and total cost of your prescriptions.  The MedTrak information will help you compare prescription costs of your drugs.
