The Columbia Public School District contributes to the Public School Retirement System of Missouri (PSRS) and to the Public Education Employee Retirement System (PEERS), formerly known as Non-Teacher School Employee Retirement System of Missouri (NTRS), cost-sharing multiple-employer defined benefit pension plans.

These plans provide retirement and disability benefits to employees and death benefits to members and beneficiaries.

Teacher Retirement - All full-time certified employees are required by state law to participate in the Public School Retirement System of Missouri.  The District deducts 14.5% of the employee's salary plus insurance cost and matches the deduction.  Employees will also pay 1.45% in FICA Medicare.

Any PSRS member subject to Social Security contributions will contribute two-thirds the normal PSRS contribution rate.  The District deducts 9.33% of the employee's salary plus insurance cost and matches the deduction.  The employee will also pay 5.65% for Social Security and FICA Medicare.

Non-Teacher Retirement - All non-certified staff working 20 hours a week or more, and eligible part-time staff members not participating in teacher retirement, are required by state law to participate in the Public Education Employee Retirement System.  The District deducts 6.86% of the employee's salary plus insurance cost and matches the deduction.  The employee will pay 5.65% for Social Security and FICA Medicare.

Beneficiary Designation - If an employee's death occurs before retirement, any amounts due will be paid in accordance with the employee's last beneficiary designation. It is important that the employee keeps their listing current to ensure distribution of account funds as circumstances change, such as marriage, divorce, a child's birth or attainment of adulthood, death of a previously named beneficiary, etc.
